What's Up?

Just a quick update; I’ve been pretty preoccupied with several things, including the Federation of Students elections and midterms. For those who haven’t heard, I’ve been acclaimed as Engineering Councillor for Student’s Council and am acting campaign manager for the Shape The Future ticket, which has been taking quite a bit of my time up lately.

It’s been a little rough lately as my Dell Notebook computer had a motherboard failure and I’ve been mooching computer time off of my roommate Yassir (Who I’m eternally grateful for…well…maybe not eternally…but pretty close). I just had the motherboard replaced 5 months ago and it went again and they refused to replace it, I bought a new computer (and won’t ever again buy from Dell). I haven’t got it yet, but it will be a big change. Say it with me: “MacBook Pro.”

Oh yeah….election…well it seems there is a Conservative Minority (with more Liberals than I expected), just as I predicted, with my Liberal Candidate winning…so it’s not too bad. I expect a very short parliament…and another election…oh goody. Well, I’d better get back to studying.

So, it’s been an interesting last few weeks. I’m now in Windsor and work for Nemak of Canada at the Windsor Aluminum Plant. About a week ago I had made a fairly lengthy blog entry, part of which I’ll repeat in this one, but due to part of my stupidity, and a little of a problem with the CMS, I lost it all :( I got discouraged and haven’t tried to write another one until now.

Well, in summary of my lost blog, I was discussing the recent news that John G. Roberts, Jr. was nominated to become Chief Justice of the United States to replace William Rehnquist when he died. This is major political news because Bush pulled his nomination to replace Sandra Day O’Connor, who retired earlier this year. This is big news because Roberts is a very young judge, and if he is Chief Justice, then he could control everything in regards to major law decisions in the US for the next 30 years. Mike likened it to having a young Pope elected and ruling over the Vatican. It’s a regime!

I had alot more commentary on it, but essentially, while I believe Roberts is an extremely qualified judge, I don’t believe he should be given such extreme power yet. I believe one of the current experienced conservative judges would be better suited. The other topic I’ll bring up to fill up this blog is the topic of unions. I’ve been observing the workings of my plant and just have a few observations I’d like to layout. First, there is rabid segregation. Separate change rooms, separate parking lots, separate entrances. Furthermore there is this professional barrier that seems to exist between the Salaried and Hourly (Unionized). Even as co-op’s we are expected to be like the Salaried, no playing cards at lunch (while the hourly people do), professional dress, separate lunch times. It’s quite astonishing.

Overall it is an interesting experience to see. Along with the possible strike next week, the tension is very high in the plant and the relations between the two groups aren’t very good. It seems as well that us co-op students get stuck in the middle, not wanting to be disrespectful of either side and trying to remain neutral. I just wish that they gave us as much respect as we give them.

Well, there it goes, a small entry just to change up the stale one. I’ll try to get back in the groove for the rest of this term. Bye :)

Hmm…been a while…I had been writing an entry, but I waited too long and lots of the stuff is out of date…so I’ll just start over. :)

I left Waterloo over a week ago and came home to Thunder Bay. I have one week left and then I’ll be moving to Windsor. I haven’t been able to do any bloggin because my computer is in Newmarket being fixed, I’ve been so busy with friends, and I have dial up internet at home. :S

I didn’t fail any classes! (Well…I haven’t got all of them back yet, but I assume that I passed those ones) I’ll be returning to Waterloo in the Winter. I have a house now with Martin from my class, and two other people I’ve never met. It will be a fun term I think, a new city to explore.

Congratulations to Lyle and Andrea who are now together. :) So happy to see them together! Andrea’s B-day was yesterday (I baked her a Strawberry and Whip cream covered Angel Food cake! I’m pretty proud of myself because usually I really suck at baking). We went to Armani’s, and I think it was the second best club I’ve been too (the best beingLa Boom in Montreal).

Oh, I’d like to thank Mrs. Steele for helping me to move out and get to Pearson Airport to catch my plane. It was very helpful and saved me alot of hassle. I always hate moving days, and her help made it easier.

Christine tells me I should talk about “differences between living away from home and living at home”. Well…everyone is trying to treat me like a guest! Gah! I’ve lived in this town longer than most of them have, and yet they treat me like an outsider? What does that mean? Do I not have a “home” anymore? (Waterloo sure doesn’t feel like home yet) And everyone treats me like I have no money at all! I’m not that “starving student”-like! That means you LYLE! I make more money then alot of you guys combined, so stop treating me like I’m living out of a cardboard box and can’t afford anything!

Well…I guess that’s enough ranting for today…I told myself I wasn’t going to do this on my new domain…oh well.
